#6 “The biased norms of our industry outright punish women who try to act with the directness and self-assuredness that I am ‘expected’ to display.”

“I routinely have to use my level and my privilege in meetings to make sure that female engineers and managers are heard and receive credit, whether by redirecting questions that are aimed at me by default, or through explicit call-outs.

I was in a meeting recently where a man "he-peated" a female PM: her idea was ignored until a man said it. If I hadn't used my privilege to interrupt to point out that she said the exact same thing a few minutes earlier, she would have been utterly invisible. This is not a rare occurrence. The biased norms of our industry outright punish women who try to act with the directness and self-assuredness that I am "expected" to display.”
