#72 “Management and HR seems unwilling to even acknowledge that there is a problem at all beyond surface platitudes.”

“Less than 10% of the developers in our regional org are women. Raising this issue with management and HR has constantly received one of three reactions: questions as to how I would solve it, dismissal of ideas I put forward on the matter (such as the establishment of new teams, or hiring freezes) in favour of continued growth, or meaningless "outreach" that doesn't fundamentally address the problem with our office space and how it might appear to be hostile to women.

Management and HR seems unwilling to even acknowledge that there is a problem at all beyond surface platitudes. Instead, as per Amazon's usual approach, the problem is shifted wholly onto developers and those who raise the issue; in doing so, we are now the ones expected by management to provide answers.

I do not have the answers, but Amazon seems to have no interest in investing in the people who might, or in holding themselves accountable in a meaningful way if it means that growth will be slowed.”
